Human hair thefts strike US salons

The US is experiencing a spat of hair extension thefts across the nation, putting the spotlight on the lucrative market for human hair.

Thought it may sound an unlikely source of income - salons across the country are on alert - after a series of raids in which tens of thousands of dollars worth of human hair has been stolen.

Thieves drove a car through the front door of a beauty supply shop in Atlanta, Georgia, and left with an estimated $10,000 in hair extensions.

In Houston, one raid at My Trendy Place hair salon earned the perpetrators $120,000 of Indian "virgin hair".

In one raid, in March, the owner of a shop in Michigan was shot dead as he tried to prevent $10,000 of extensions from being taken.

Other thefts over the last few months, include a separate $85,000 raid in Texas, and two raids in California, worth $60,000 and $10,000 respectively.

Surveillance cameras have shown burglars breaking through walls and windows, slithering along floors to avoid alarms and then grabbing expensive hair extensions from the shelves and stockrooms.

Sgt Frank Quinn of Houston Police said the burglars are selling the stolen hair on eBay, Craigslist or more informally from the boot of their cars.

He said some of them just wander into neighborhoods and apartment complexes and try to sell them to people they come across.

"It's quite expensive to get quality hair so it's in demand, but it's becoming like a drug. People have to have them.

"Many of my clients remove their hair [for regular maintenance] and want it back on the same day, they're so addicted.

"At a regular salon, you pay $4-500 for a bundle and people usually buy three or four bundles, for different styles and different colours."

A regular head can wear three or four bundles, he says. Each bundle takes an hour and a half to weave in and requires changing every two to three months, to re-touch the colors.

The lengths that burglars - and consumers - will go to satisfy this demand for hair that is straight and long says much about society's preoccupation with image, he adds, and it's not something that can be dismissed easily.

"It's about how we feel about ourselves and how we absorb these images of what it means to be beautiful."

HOW TO :Untangle Hair Extensions

First: Get a Nylon-Boar Combo brush. Please reject the idea of a "Hair Extension Brush" or "Loop Brush". Idk who those work for, but certainly they won't get out your tangles. A Nylon-Boar Brush does double the work in half the time. Nylon Bristles Detangle your hair and add volume. The Boar Bristles shine the hair; distributing your natural oils throughout your hair and smoothing the hair strands. thsi results in a full brush-out of even the worst tangles - in minutes.

Second: Be sure to use a hair polisher before bruising. I recommend I.C. Hair Polisher from Sally's.

If you use Permalocs™ Microlocs™ Strand Extensions, or any Strand-by-Strand Method, be sure that any product you use does not contain oil, sulfates, or Protein of any kind.

Third: Brush Curly or wavy hair from the ends up. When wearing hair extensions, be certain that you secure the hair by holding it firmly - so that at the root there is no tugging at the extension attachment point (you don't want to loosen your hair extensions).

Hair Extensions for Naturally Wavy & Curly Hair

Whether your hair is naturally curly or naturally wavy, if you've ever tried wearing hair extensions, you may be quite familiar with this issue. None of the Hair Extensions sold in Stores seem to perfectly match natural curls or waves - almost Never. Even if they seem to match, they straighten over time, and as soon as you flat-iron the hair, not all of it will return to the original curl pattern; some pieces will be straight, some wavier, some curly. Then, once the hair settles in, it starts tangling and knotting - consistently! What a pain!!

I used to go through package after package of beauty-supply hair; tangle-free, cuticle hair, Remi Hair, and even supposed "Virgin Hair" brands. None would stay curly - and brushing it out took forever! Not only have I experienced this phenomenon, I have also witnessed the issue with my hair extension clients that insist on buying Wet & Wavy or high-cost "Remi" and "Virgin" store brands. The hair pattern loosens - and the hair tangles up - within weeks. It takes thirty minutes to an hour to comb out the hair, which will continue to tangle throughout the day; even after a thorough brush-out.

Why is that, you ask? When hair is sold in the beauty supply, it is usually brand-name hair. These companies, selling human hair have found it easier to process all hair to meet some uniformity to lend to the strength of their brand.

Simply put; they dye, perm, and process the heck out of the hair to make it appear consistent, so that every time you go buy "Brand X Human Hair" in "Deep Curl", you will reliably get the same look (as much as a human hair product can be consistent (since no two people's hair makeup is completely identical).

Processed Packaged Hair is great for the budget hair shopper, but as we get into higher-priced hair, still, none retains it curl, luster, or consistency! I've searched the globe for a hair that better matches my own - in a curl pattern I desire. I have found the best hair is 100% Natural hair. Not a brand name. Not sold in a box or package. You want 100% Natural Hair that is Straight off the donor's head. Curls preserved. Chemical Processes, such as coloring, relaxing, and perming dries out cuticles and causes natural curls to straighten - and even break off when dry. That is why the hair you buy from your local beauty supply doesn't match your natural curls. Processed extension hair loses its elasticity. Your natural hair is full of elasticity; which is why hair extensions tend to look "fake" or "plastic-y' next to your real hair.

I am of mixed ethnicity - Native American, African American, and Criole. My hair is Very Very Curly, with some areas of my hair being more wavy - and it frizzes (or gets "Krusty the Clown"as I call it).

Simply put, my hair has A LOT more volume when it dries, v.s. when wet - and not the cute kind of volume, either. My Natural Hair is shoulder-length when wet, then it dries very springy & curly; shrinking to neck-length. Not cute at all in my book, since I love long, flowing hair. It is very difficult to find naturally curly hair extensions that will "poof" up when dry to match my own hair's volume. The answer to this problem lies in the country of origin for your extension hair.
